NOUAKCHOTT – Three escaped terrorists have been killed and another arrested, Mauritania's defense and interior ministries said in a statement on Saturday.

The Armed Forces and the anti-terrorist Gendarmerie carried out an operation to capture the fugitives in an area of rugged mountains in the Adrar region, the ministries said.

One gendarme "died a martyr" in the firefight with the fugitives.

Last Sunday, the four terrorists escaped from the central prison of Nouakchott after killing two national guards and wounding two others.

Two escapees had been sentenced to death, and the other two on remand, all on terrorism-related charges.
